CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Words are easy. It's the actions I always get hung up on. Lies are so much simpler to shape with your tongue than with your hands.”

-Excerpt from Chapter Sixteen, CONscience

THE NOSE OF THE PLANE dipped and Gabe's stomach lurched as he was nearly lifted from his seat. Their flight suddenly felt like a roller-coaster, only instead of a nice swoop at the end, it was looking more like a horrifying crunch.

“Gremlins?” he asked incredulously, holding the jian almost as tightly as he was his panic. “Like, 'don't feed after midnight' gremlins?”

Heather took three shaky steps to cross to the cockpit behind Mutambe. “No, like chew the wires and kill us all, gremlins.” She grabbed the hexen's shoulder and helped him out of the way, then she planted an open palm strike just at the deadbolt. The metal shrieked and popped under her strength and the door slammed open to reveal wind rushing through a small hole in the cockpit window and the pilot slumped over in her chair. Heather dived in and tossed the woman aside, then took a seat as if she had any idea what she was doing.

“You learn how to fly a jet in the French revolution?” Gabe called.

She ran her hands over the control board, clearly flailing for clues. “Not helping! Shut up!”

Fortunately, Mutambe was already pulling himself into the cockpit behind her. “Yes, please do!” He took the other seat and started confidently working controls. The engines revved and sputtered to either side of them, and it felt like they might be leveling out. The man then picked up the radio. “Mayday, mayday. We are en route to Shanghai via—”

The engines guttered and stopped.

For a moment, all Gabe could hear was the rush of wind as they glided through the night sky. Then something hit the window next to him, and he turned to find bright yellow eyes over a sharp-toothed grin dangling bits of wire.

Everything snapped into focus for him then. No amount of piloting or calling for help would save them. It was desperation time. He unbuckled and stood, then slipped the strap of the jian over his head across the bandolier. He spotted the cabinet right away, just where Phillip had shown him, and he pulled himself toward it even as the plane's dive steepened. Lorelei was nearest, and her eyes were wide and terrified as he passed. Her hands were locked around the arms of her seat, and she looked frozen in fear.

Gabe yanked open the cabinet next to the emergency exit, half expecting to find that Phillip had lied and it was actually full of spare toilet paper. But they were all there—ten bright orange parachutes, ready for a bunch of desperate idiots who had no idea what to do with them. He grabbed one from its hook and tossed it into Lorelei's lap, and she immediately clung to it. Then he threw another pack the length of the plane to land near Dante, who was gripping the chairs on either side of him.
